Gas Malaysia’s Mangrove Planting Initiative for Ecosystem Protection

KUALA SELANGOR, 8 OCTOBER 2020 – With a commitment to improve conservation efforts of the natural environment, Gas Malaysia Berhad (“Gas Malaysia”), a member of MMC Group, held a mangrove tree planting programme involving its employees at Kuala Selangor Nature Park.

This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative was led by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap, and was made possible by employees from Gas Malaysia that took part in planting about 300 mangrove seedlings along a designated area in Kuala Selangor Nature Park. Also present at the CSR event were Prof Dr Ahmad Ismail, President of the Malaysia Nature Society Malaysia and Puan Rahila binti Rahmat, YDP Majlis Daerah Kuala Selangor.

Commenting on this CSR initiative, Ahmad Hashimi said, “We subscribe to the view that our corporate ambitions and CSR efforts are interdependent for our business to be sustainable in the long run. This balance is important for us, as we recognise that generating improved earnings in the industry is not our sole priority. As a responsible corporate entity promoting natural gas as a clean energy alternative, we are fully aware of the significant role that our business plays in environmental conservation. Amidst the conditions around the COVID-19 pandemic, we are committed to adhere to the strict Standard Operating Procedures by the Malaysian Government. This includes having the body temperature taken, practise social distancing and wearing face masks.”

In ensuring the success of this CSR programme, supervisors from Kuala Selangor Nature Park will be monitoring the mangrove’s growth and survival over the next year.

“Study has shown that mangroves play an important role as a natural barrier against erosive coastlines and is an important breeding ground for diverse marine life. Given the enormous benefits of cultivating mangrove trees, proper administration and conservation is therefore necessary to ensure the continued existence of mangroves,” Ahmad Hashimi elaborated.

“Previously, on a similar effort, we have partnered with the Forestry Department of Pahang and executed a CSR initiative by planting Rhu Pantai seedlings along the coastline of Kampung Pantai Sungai Ular, Kuantan, Pahang. We will continue to pursue our efforts in the green initiatives to bring a positive and meaningful impact to the environment,” he concluded.
