SHAH ALAM, 3 JANUARY 2024 – As part of its commitment to align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), Gas Malaysia Berhad (Gas Malaysia), a member of MMC Group, continued its pursuit of fostering long-term sustainable development by actively exploring the potential of waste-to-energy solutions.
As concerns over climate change intensify, renewable energy has emerged as a key component in the energy mix playing a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions. Based on NETR, the government aims to increase the country’s installed renewable energy capacity to 40% by 2035 and to 70% by 2050. In line with this vision, Gas Malaysia has commenced its decarbonisation journey by adding greater impetus to the development of cleaner energy sources through its foray into the green gas venture.
In light of this, Gas Malaysia’s wholly owned subsidiary, Gas Malaysia Virtual Pipeline Sdn Bhd (GMVP) has partnered with Greenviro Solution Sdn Bhd (Greenviro), marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment towards sustainable energy solutions. Under this collaboration, GMVP will procure biomethane generated at the Ampang Jajar Waste Transfer Station, injecting it into Gas Malaysia’s Natural Gas Distribution System (NGDS).
The recently held groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of construction of the Ampang Jajar Waste Transfer Station and it was graced by the presence of YBhg Dato Azhar Bin Haji Arshad, Datuk Bandar Seberang Perai and YB Tuan H’ng Mooi Lye, Exco Kerajaan Tempatan Dan Perancangan Bandar & Desa. The Ampang Jajar Waste Transfer Station will be operated by Greenviro and it is anticipated to be operational by the second half of 2025.
Commenting on Gas Malaysia’s involvement in renewable energy, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Gas Malaysia, En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap said, “Cultivating strategic alliances with organisations that share similar values is imperative for achieving sustainable growth. Our close collaboration with our business partners is rooted in our unwavering optimism in the future of renewable energy. This effort aligns well with our Business Sustainability Plan, unveiled in November this year.”
Gas Malaysia aspires to play a pivotal role in contributing towards the nation’s aspiration of a low carbon future and to fulfil the climate change agenda. This green gas venture exemplifies the company’s effort in harnessing renewable energy and actively contributing to the progression of a more sustainable future.
With a firm footing in the industry for more than 3 decades, this venture is also part of Gas Malaysia’s long-term strategy to explore other avenues within the gas value chain to further consolidate its position in the industry. In addition to Greenviro, Gas Malaysia has also forged alliances with other companies over the years, including palm oil mill owners, leveraging each other’s expertise to propel the advancement of the renewable energy plan.
