SHAH ALAM, 10 January 2020 – In line with its commitment towards being a responsible business entity, Gas Malaysia Berhad (“Gas Malaysia”), a member of MMC Group, launched a fabric recycling initiative at its head office in Shah Alam. This effort is to reduce the increasing number of unwanted fabrics in the landfills.
These fabrics include unwanted garments, clothing accessories, household textiles, footwear, children’s toys, fabric remnants and even bags. The unwanted fabrics will then be sorted based on their usability and then be ferried to charitable organisations while those that are in poor condition will be recycled into materials like industrial wiping cloth and wearable upcycled clothing.
At the launching ceremony, a fabric recycling bin was placed at Gas Malaysia’s head office. This initiative is a collaboration between Gas Malaysia and Kloth Cares, a Malaysian social entrepreneurship movement with an aim to keep fabrics out of landfills.
The guest of honor officiating the event was Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of Gas Malaysia, Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap together with the Management team.
Following the officiation ceremony, Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap remarked, “Being a responsible corporate entity, we are constantly seeking for more innovative methods to integrate simple yet meaningful sustainability efforts into our business functions. Hence, 2/4after recognising the severity of unwanted fabrics in landfills, we collectively decided to address this concern by initiating fabric recycling initiative, to foster a sustainable future.
In a bid to get more people to be involved in this noble initiative, Gas Malaysia also welcomed participation from a private university college, namely UOW Malaysia KDU. This effort is to further inculcate the culture of recycling by placing similar fabric recycling bins at educational premises such as public and private universities. In view of that, a prize giving ceremony was conducted at the event to honor UOW Malaysia KDU students, for the best recycle bin wrap designed.
“We are honored to have the presence of Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah here today, as she has been a strong patron for recycling fabric waste,” he elaborated.
Ahmad Hashimi concluded by citing the significance of involving Gas Malaysia employees, “Besides being a responsible business entity, we also aim to instill a greater sense of awareness and responsibility amongst our valued employees by cultivating the habit of recycling,” he concluded.
