JOHOR BAHRU, 13 NOVEMBER 2023 – In line with the national energy transition agenda, Gas Malaysia Berhad’s (Gas Malaysia) wholly-owned subsidiary, Gas Malaysia Virtual Pipeline Sdn Bhd (GMVP) conducted a formal document exchange ceremony with Johor Plantations Berhad (Johor Plantations) during the Asia Pacific Climate Week 2023 (APCW 2023) in Johor Bahru. The ceremony was witnessed by YB Tuan Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, YAB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Menteri Besar of Johor and Mr. Niclas Svenningsen, Manager of Climate Action Outreach, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Prior to the document exchange ceremony both GMVP and Johor Plantations formalised their commitment by signing a gas purchase agreement. Under this agreement, GMVP will procure biomethane from Johor Plantations with an annual contract quantity of 250,000 MMBtu, to be injected into Gas Malaysia’s Natural Gas Distribution System (NGDS) network. The biomethane will be sourced from Johor Plantations palm oil mill located in Sedenak, Johor Bahru.
The document exchange was formalised in a handover ceremony where Gas Malaysia was represented by Group Chief Executive Officer, Encik Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap while Johor Plantations was represented by Managing Director, Encik Mohd Faris Adli Shukrey.
This green gas venture embodies the steadfast commitment by both parties towards harnessing renewable energy and actively participating in the advancement of a greener future.
At the document handover ceremony, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Gas Malaysia, Encik Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap said, “Forming strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations is crucial for a sustainable long-term growth. We are honoured to collaborate closely with our business partner, Johor Plantations. Our firm belief in the future of renewable energy underpins this effort, aligning well with our recently launched business sustainability plan that was developed to support the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).”
In its steadfast commitment to strengthen its sustainability initiatives, Gas Malaysia is planning to install rooftop solar panels in all its office premises across Peninsular Malaysia. Additionally, the company is also dedicated to transitioning its entire fleet of petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles (EV) by 2032. These initiatives exemplify Gas Malaysia’s dedication towards a sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
Gas Malaysia’s business sustainability plan is designed to be holistic and is anchored on four pillars which include advancing environmental sustainability, strengthening business delivery, fostering people-centric organisation as well as enhancing governance and transparency.
