PENANG, 13 March 2024 – Gas Malaysia Berhad (Gas Malaysia), a member of MMC Group, remains steadfast in its commitment to solidify its position in delivering best energy solutions for a better future through its Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology, to promote a greener future as well as elevate energy efficiency across diverse industrial landscapes.
Gas Malaysia Energy Advance Sdn Bhd (GMEA), a joint venture between Gas Malaysia Berhad and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation, (TGES), formerly known as Energy Advance Co. Ltd., recently commissioned operation of the CHP plant for its third customer, Fatty Chemical (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (FCM) in Prai, Penang.
The inauguration of the CHP plant at FCM signifies an additional noteworthy achievement for GMEA in delivering energy efficient solutions to its industrial customers.
In March 2022, GMEA and FCM inked an energy supply agreement which includes the provision of up to 6.7MW of power and 35 tonnes per hour of steam to FCM for a period of 15 years. With the potential to reduce almost 18,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, CHP technology is projected to make a significant contribution to FCM’s sustainability goals.
The technology known as cogeneration also referred to as a CHP system, produces both electricity and heat from a single fuel source. It generates electricity and captures the heat, which would traditionally be wasted, to provide useful thermal energy. The CHP system caters well for industrial sector customers who require electricity and useful thermal energy such as steam or hot water, and it is also recognised for its ability to boost energy efficiency up to 87%.
Gas Malaysia’s Group Chief Executive Officer, En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap said, “As industries place greater emphasis on adopting environmentally responsible business practices, particularly in the context of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the
CHP system stands out as a beacon of hope for its positive environmental footprint. It presents a comprehensive solution that not only effectively addresses customers’ energy requirements but also aligns well with the imperatives of fostering a more
sustainable and eco-friendly future.”
Having firmly established itself in the industry for over three decades, Gas Malaysia is leveraging its wealth of experience to strengthen its foothold in the cogeneration sector, aligning with its 10-year strategic business plan, known as GM32.
“In the journey towards a sustainable future, the CHP system stands as a testament to addressing the dual challenges of meeting energy demands and reducing environmental impact. We remain optimistic that the adoption of CHP technology in the industrial sector will progressively become more essential as the need for sustainable energy practices grows. By championing efficiency, reducing carbon footprints and ensuring economic viability, CHP will pave the way for a greener, more sustainable industrial landscape,” En. Ahmad Hashimi concluded.
