Our Milestones

Steering Responsible Growth withStrong Governance
Our robust Governance & Policies reflect our ethos of transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership, guiding us in our mission to deliver sustainable energy solutions responsibly.
1992

Formation of Gas Malaysia

Gas Malaysia was born following an alliance forged between MMC – Shapadu (Holdings), Tokyo Gas – Mitsui & Co Holdings Sdn. Bhd. and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS).

Our inception marked a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector, as it laid the groundwork for the distribution of natural gas to industries, businesses, and homes.

1997

Gas Supply Agreement

Signed the Gas Supply Agreement between PETRONAS as the seller and Gas Malaysia as the purchaser for the supply of gas, marking a pivotal moment in providing a cleaner, more efficient energy source to Malaysian consumers.

1998

Gas Utility License

Pursuant to the Gas Supply Act 1993, a Gas Utility License (“GUL”) was issued to Gas Malaysia. Since them, Gas Malaysia has been at the front of driving innovation and sustainability in the natural gas industry.

2000

Gas Malaysia proudly achieved its first accreditation with the Quality Management Systems MS ISO 9002:1994 certificate, which was later upgraded to ISO 9001:2008.

Gas Malaysia was granted a license to supply and sell reticulated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), marking a significant expansion in its service offerings.

2003

Strengthening Our Commitment to Sustainability and Safety

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement and sustainability, we are proud to add more certifications to our portfolio. This includes achieving compliance with the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2015) and the Occupational Health & Safety Management System (ISO 45001:2018) standards. These certifications reflect our dedication to environmental stewardship, workplace safety, and fostering a sustainable future.

2007

Awarded the certificate for implementing the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems which complies with OHSAS 18001:1999 (upgraded to OHSAS 18001:2007).

2012

Gas Malaysia is proudly listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia, boasting a robust market capitalisation of RM2.8 billion. This achievement underscores our strong financial foundation and commitment to sustainable growth.

In a landmark move, Gas Malaysia has embarked on its first large-scale gas supply projects by partnering with the developers of the Sendayan Tech Valley Project. This collaboration highlights our dedication to advancing energy solutions and supporting industrial growth in Malaysia.

2014

Gas Malaysia has strategically expanded its non-regulated business sector through joint venture agreements, enabling us to generate and supply electricity and steam/heat to industries via our state-of-the-art Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system. This innovative approach not only enhances our service offerings but also reinforces our commitment to providing efficient and sustainable energy solutions to our industrial partners.

Gas Malaysia proudly announces the creation of Gas Malaysia Energy Advance Sdn. Bhd. (GMEA), a groundbreaking joint venture with Tokyo Gas’ Energy Advance Co. Ltd. GMEA, owned 66% by Gas Malaysia Berhad and 34% by Tokyo Gas’ Energy Advance Co. Ltd., will deliver electricity and steam/heat to the industrial sector via an advanced Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system. This collaboration highlights our dedication to providing cutting-edge, sustainable energy solutions.

2015

We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sabah Energy Corporation. This strategic partnership aimed to explore and capitalise on opportunities in harnessing and distributing Bio Compressed Natural Gas (BioCNG) in Sabah.

Together, we committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions and driving innovation in the region.

Sime Darby Gas Malaysia BioCNG Sdn Bhd (SDGMB) was a groundbreaking joint venture between Gas Malaysia Berhad and Sime Darby Energy Solutions Sdn. Bhd. Pioneering the Malaysian market, we were the first to deliver compressed Biomethane to industrial customers, setting new standards in the energy sector.

2016

Expanding Access to Compressed Natural Gas with Virtual Pipeline Technology

Launched an innovative solution to provide compressed natural gas to customers without access to the Natural Gas Distribution System (NGDS).

Through our state-of-the-art virtual pipeline technology, we ensure that even remote and off-grid customers can enjoy a reliable, cost-effective, and efficient supply of compressed natural gas.

Strategic Unbundling for Market Liberalisation

In preparation for the implementation of the Third-Party Access regime and market liberalisation, Gas Malaysia strategically unbundled its business into two distinct entities: Gas Malaysia Distribution Sdn. Bhd. (GMD) and Gas Malaysia Energy and Services Sdn. Bhd. (GMES).

GMD is dedicated to managing the Natural Gas Distribution System, while GMES focus on delivering comprehensive energy solutions to the industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. This strategic move positions us to serve our customers better and embrace the future of a liberalised energy market.

2018

We successfully secured an agreement with the Perak State Government to develop, operate, and own the Natural Gas Distribution System (NGDS) network in Kinta Valley, Perak. This strategic partnership underscores our commitment to expanding our infrastructure and delivering reliable energy solutions to the region.

Gas Malaysia Synergy Drive Sdn. Bhd. (GMSD) emerged as a dynamic joint venture between Gas Malaysia Venture 1 Sdn. Bhd. and Sime Darby Energy Solutions Sdn. Bhd. (SDES), specialising in providing Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solutions to the industrial sector.

2019

Gas Malaysia secures a 20-year Distribution License for GMD and a 10-year Shipping License for GMES, ensuring reliable energy distribution and transportation for the future.

Gas Malaysia proactively moves towards sustainability by initiating the acquisition of biomethane for injection into the NGDS, paving the path for greener energy solutions.

2020

Maintained our various ISO certifications and expanded its scope to include GMD, GMES and Gas Malaysia Retail Services Sdn Bhd (GMRS).

2022

Gas Malaysia Green Venture Sdn. Bhd. (GMGV), formerly known as Gas Malaysia IEV Sdn. Bhd. and Gas Malaysia Virtual Pipeline Sdn. Bhd. (GMVP), was established with the primary goal of spearheading green gas initiatives such as biomethane and biogas projects.

In July, we celebrated a major achievement by welcoming our 1000th industrial customer through GMES.

2023
