Pursuant to the Gas Supply Act 1993,
a Gas Utility Licence (GUL) was issued to Gas Malaysia by the Director General, Department of Electricity
and Gas Supply (DEGS) in September 1998. In January 2002, the DEGS was dissolved and its regulatory
functions were taken over by the Energy Commission (EC). The Energy Commission was set up to enhance
the effectiveness of regulatory control over the energy sector (i.e the electricity supply industry
and the gas supply industry at reticulation stage.)
To comply with the GUL conditions, Gas Malaysia regularly submit monthly, quarterly and annually
reports to the EC outlining issues relating to operating and maintaining the gas distribution systems
and customer service. Under the terms of the licence, various Codes and Statements of Performance have
been submitted to the EC and are updated and modified on a continuous basis in line with market changes
and international best practices.
Gas Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a product of the privatization process, is a joint venture company between
Malaysia Mining Corporation -Shapadu Holdings Sdn Bhd, Tokyo Gas-Mitsui & Co Holdings Sdn Bhd, Petronas
Gas Berhad and Petroliam Nasional Berhad. EPU has been entrusted with the role of overseeing and
